# [Do I Need to Script My Videos?](https://www.horizonvisualmedia.com/latest/do-i-need-to-script-my-videos)

When it comes to putting together your digital media or your video marketing - do you need a script ahead of time?

The short answer is: **not always.**

In fact, some of the best videos I've worked on haven't involved a traditional script at all. It really depends on [what we're creating,](https://www.horizonvisualmedia.com/latest/how-to-brief-your-videographer) who we're talking to, and what we want the audience to take away from it.

## A Script Isn't Always the Best Approach

There are certainly times when a script makes sense. Commercials, training videos, explainers, or anything with very specific messaging may benefit from having every word planned out. But when we're trying to capture a person's experience, tell a company's story, or let employees talk about what they do, I often prefer a more conversational approach.

Instead of giving someone a paragraph to memorize, we can work from a few key talking points. I'll ask questions, guide the conversation, and help make sure we're getting the information we need without making the person sound like they're reading something they've memorized. That's usually when people start to relax.

## The Goal Is to Sound Like Yourself

I don't want someone to watch a video and think, “That person definitely doesn't talk like that in real life." Authenticity matters. Your audience is smarter than we often give them credit for.

Whether we're filming a business owner, an employee, a customer testimonial, or someone sharing a personal story, I want the finished video to sound like *them*. That doesn't mean we don't prepare. It just means we're preparing the person rather than forcing them to memorize every word.

## The Right Direction Can Make All the Difference

Being comfortable on camera doesn't come naturally to everyone, and that's completely okay. Part of my job is helping people through that process.

We can talk through the message beforehand, figure out the important points, and approach the interview or filming in a way that feels natural. If something doesn't come out right, we try it again. If a better thought comes up during the conversation, we follow it.

The goal isn't perfection. It's creating something that feels genuine, communicates clearly, and represents you or your business well. You don't necessarily need a perfect script to make a great video. You need a clear idea of what you want to say, an understanding of who you're saying it to, and someone who can help bring that message out naturally.

Sometimes that's a script. Sometimes it's a few talking points. And sometimes it's simply a good conversation. From my perspective, the best videos are usually the ones where people sound like themselves. [Let's talk about what works best for you!](https://www.horizonvisualmedia.com/contact)
