What Kind of Digital Content Gets People to Stop Scrolling?

If there’s one thing every business wants from social media, it’s attention.

But getting someone to stop scrolling is about more than creating something flashy, especially if you have a specific goal in mind for your content. From my experience working with businesses on video and digital media, the content that performs best usually make the audience curious, teaches them something, makes them laugh, or simply feel connected to what they're seeing.

The goal isn't to create content that screams for attention. It's to create content that earns it.

Start With a Strong Hook

You usually only have a few seconds to capture someone's attention, so the beginning of your video matters.

A strong hook could be a question, an interesting statement, a quick visual, or something that immediately addresses a problem your audience has. Instead of starting with a long introduction about your business, get to the point.

For example, rather than starting with “Hi, we're a local company that has been serving customers for 20 years…”, try starting with a question your customer actually cares about. Now you've given someone a reason to keep watching.

Give People Something to Feel or Learn

Attention is only the first step. The content also needs to give people a reason to stick around.

That might be useful information, a relatable story, or a behind-the-scenes look at something they don't normally get to see. Emotion and curiosity are powerful because they make content feel more personal and memorable.

This is also where storytelling becomes important. Even a short social media video can have a beginning, middle, and end. Show us the problem, the process, or the outcome. Give us a reason to care about what happens next. Something we can relate to!

Don't Forget the Visuals

Obviously, video is a visual medium, and what people see matters.

Movement, changing camera angles, close-up details, people interacting, and visually interesting environments can all help keep a viewer engaged. But that doesn't mean every video needs to be fast-paced or filled with constant cuts.

Sometimes a simple, authentic shot works better than something overly produced. Good lighting, clear audio, intentional framing, and captions can go a long way toward making content easier and more enjoyable to watch.

And don't forget that many people watch social media with the sound off. Adding captions isn't just an accessibility feature. It can also help make sure your message gets across regardless of how someone is watching!

Want to Create Content That Gets Noticed?

Getting someone to stop scrolling isn't about chasing every social media trend.

It's about understanding what your audience cares about and giving them a reason to pause.

Start with a strong hook. Use visuals that support the story. Give people something useful, interesting, or relatable. Most importantly, make your content feel like it was created for your audience—not just about your business.

That's what turns a quick scroll into an actual connection.
